How to Get a TikTok Video's Transcript (or Script) as Text
Three ways to turn a TikTok into text: read its captions, paste the link into a free converter, or transcribe the audio, plus what each one can and can't do.
TikTok has no "Show transcript" button. You can watch a video with captions on, but you can't select the words, copy them, or save them as a file. So if you want a TikTok as text, for a script, a quote, notes or a caption for your own post, you need to get it out some other way.
This guide covers the three routes that work, which one fits which job, and the one hard limit nobody can get around.
What TikTok gives you natively
Creators can turn on auto captions in the editing page after they record or upload a video, and they can edit the generated text. Viewers see those captions by default and can switch them off in their playback options. TikTok launched the feature mainly as an accessibility tool, and it also helps people watching without sound.
That is all it does. The captions are a display layer on the video. There is no copy-all, no download and no transcript view. This describes the feature as TikTok introduced it in 2021, so menu names may have changed since.
Three ways to get the text out
| Method | Best for | Needs captions on the video? | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retype from the screen | A single line you want to quote | Yes, or you listen and type | Free, slow |
| Paste the link into a converter | A full transcript in seconds, with timestamps | Yes | Free, a few per day |
| Transcribe the audio with speech-to-text | Videos with no captions, or when you want speaker labels | No | Varies by tool |
Method 1: paste the link into a converter
This is the fastest route for most videos. UpSolo's free tool reads the caption track that is already on the TikTok and hands it back in the format you choose. No account, no watermark.
- 1
Copy the full video link
In the TikTok app, tap Share, then Copy link. On desktop, copy the address bar. The tool wants the full
tiktok.com/@handle/video/...address. A shortenedvm.tiktok.comorm.tiktok.comlink doesn't carry the full address, so open it once in a browser and copy the link it lands on. - 2
Paste it into the converter
Open the TikTok to text tool and paste the link. If you know the caption language, type its code (like
enores) in the Caption language field. Leave it blank to take whichever track the video has. - 3
Pick a format
Choose paragraphs, plain text, timestamped lines, SRT, VTT or raw JSON. SRT and VTT give you a real subtitle file you can drop into an editor.
- 4
Copy or download
Copy the text, or download the file. Everything stays on the result panel, so you can switch format without pulling the video again.
If the TikTok has no captions, there is no text to pull, from this tool or any link-based one. A creator who never turned captions on, or a video with only music and no speech, gives a link tool nothing to read. Use Method 2 below instead.
Free limits to know about
The free tool allows 4 transcripts a day per visitor, with a short gap between requests, and resets at midnight UTC. That is plenty for grabbing a few scripts, and not enough for bulk work. If you transcribe a lot of short-form video, plan around the cap.
Method 2: transcribe the audio when there are no captions
A speech-to-text tool listens to the audio and writes what it hears, so it works whether or not the creator added captions. The usual path is to save the video file, upload it to a transcription service, then export TXT, SRT or VTT. Several commercial tools do this, and their accuracy and price vary, so test one on a clip you can check by ear before you rely on it.
Be careful with downloading. Saving someone else's video is governed by TikTok's terms and the creator's rights, and the same goes for what you do with the text afterwards. Transcribing your own videos is the safest case.
- Paste a link, no file handling
- Uses captions already on the video
- Timestamps and SRT/VTT built in
- Nothing to read if captions are missing
- Works with no captions
- Needs the video file
- Often adds speaker labels
- Can mishear music, slang and names
What people use a TikTok transcript for
- •Repurposing: turn a short video's script into a caption, a thread or a newsletter blurb. The words are the creator's, so your own videos are the clean case, and credit anyone else.
- •Research: skim ten videos in the time it takes to watch one, and search the text for the claim you need. See how to search a video transcript for the same trick on YouTube.
- •Accessibility: a downloadable SRT or VTT helps you add or fix captions on your own clips. Our guide to SRT vs VTT explains which to pick.
- •Learning: a lot of explainers live on TikTok now. Pull the text, then turn it into notes or cards, as in video to flashcards.
Tips for cleaner text
- Skim it against the video for names, numbers and slang, which auto-captions get wrong most often.
- Fix mid-sentence line breaks: caption cues are short fragments, so choose the paragraphs format for reading.
- Keep the timestamps if you plan to cite or clip a moment.
- Check you are allowed to reuse the words. A transcript doesn't give you rights over someone else's video.
- Save the file somewhere you can find it. Videos get deleted, and a copy of the text outlives the link.
Do more with the text than read it
Save a transcript to your UpSolo library and turn it into a summary, flashcards, a quiz or a mind map. You get a free daily allowance of credits when you sign up.
Does TikTok have a built-in transcript?
No. TikTok can show auto captions on screen if the creator turned them on, but there is no transcript view and no way to copy or download them.
How do I convert a TikTok video to text for free?
Copy the video's full link, paste it into the free TikTok to text tool, and pick a format. It works when the video has a caption track, and the free tier allows 4 transcripts a day.
Can I get a TikTok transcript if the video has no captions?
Not from a link-based tool, because there is nothing to read. You would need to transcribe the audio with a speech-to-text service instead.
Can I download TikTok captions as an SRT or VTT file?
Yes, with the converter: choose SRT or VTT before running it and download the result. See SRT vs VTT for which one your editor needs.
Why won't my TikTok link work?
Shortened share links (vm.tiktok.com or m.tiktok.com) don't carry the full address. Open the link in a browser first and paste the full tiktok.com/@handle/video/... URL it lands on.
Is it okay to reuse a TikTok transcript?
The creator still owns the words. Quoting with credit is usually fine, but copying a script to pass off as yours is not, and you are responsible for how you use the text.
