How to Add Chapters to a YouTube Video (Timestamp Rules + Examples)

YouTube's exact chapter rules, a copy-paste description format, auto chapters versus manual ones, and fixes for when your chapters do not show.

Chapters turn a long video into a clickable outline: a segmented progress bar and a list viewers can jump through. You can add them in about two minutes by pasting a list of timestamps into the description. The part people get stuck on is the rules, and then writing the titles. Here is the format YouTube asks for, how to get a list without scrubbing through the whole video, and what to check when nothing appears.

YouTube's chapter requirements

These are the rules from YouTube's own help page for adding chapters yourself. Break one and the list is just plain text in your description.

Source: YouTube Help, "Add video chapters".
RuleWhat YouTube says
First timestampThe first timestamp you list must start with 00:00.
Minimum countAt least three timestamps, listed in ascending order.
Minimum lengthEach chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
Where it goesIn the video's description.

How to add chapters manually

  1. 1

Open the video in YouTube Studio

Go to Content, then click the video you want to edit.

  2. 2

Write the list in the description

One line per chapter: the timestamp, then the title. Start at 00:00 and keep the times increasing.

  3. 3

    Save

Save the video. Chapters show on the progress bar and in the description once YouTube processes it.

Here is a description block that follows the rules. Paste it near the top of the description, below your hook, and swap in your own times and titles.

Description example
00:00 Why most notes fail
01:12 The 3-column method
03:45 Setting up the page
06:30 A worked example
09:10 Reviewing after 24 hours
11:20 Common mistakes
Keep the list clean

Put each chapter on its own line, and do not skip the 00:00 line. Without it, YouTube will not treat the list as chapters.

Getting the timestamps without rewatching

The slow way is to scrub through the video and note where each topic starts. A faster way is to start from the transcript, because topic changes are easy to spot in text. If you need the raw text first, see how to get the transcript of a YouTube video.

Free tool · YouTubeYouTube Chapter GeneratorPaste your video's link and get a timestamped chapter list built from its captions, ready to paste into the description. No account needed.

The UpSolo YouTube chapter generator reads the video's transcript, picks 5 to 12 sections where the topic shifts, and starts the list at 0:00 so it meets YouTube's first rule. It works on any video YouTube has captions for, including auto-generated ones, and the free version gives each visitor 4 credits a day (a chapter list costs 2, or 1 when the transcript was already fetched).

Pasting a link and getting a timestamped transcript, the text a chapter list is built from.

Treat the output as a draft. It is AI-generated, so check each timestamp against the video before you publish, and rename any title that does not sound like you.

Automatic chapters versus manual chapters

Automatic chapters
  • The "Allow automatic chapters" box is checked by default for new uploads.
  • Not all videos are eligible, and not all eligible videos get chapters.
  • You do not control the titles or where the breaks fall.
Manual chapters
  • You write the timestamps and titles in the description.
  • Saving them overrides automatic chapters for that video.
  • You choose the wording, so titles can carry keywords viewers search for.

To turn automatic chapters off for one video, open it in Studio, click Show more, uncheck "Allow automatic chapters" and save. For all future uploads, go to Settings, Upload defaults, Advanced settings and uncheck the same option.

Writing chapter titles people click

A chapter title is a tiny headline. Viewers scan the list to decide whether to stay, so vague titles like "Part 2" waste the feature.

Good chapter titles
  • Name the topic or the question answered, not the order ("Why the second pass is faster", not "Next point").
  • Keep it short, around 3 to 7 words, so it fits on a phone.
  • Use the words a viewer would search for, once, without stuffing.
  • Make each title distinct so the list reads as an outline.
  • Put the payoff early: if the video has one answer people want, give it its own chapter.

A well-titled chapter list also doubles as a study outline. If you watch lectures or tutorials to learn, the same list helps with taking notes from a YouTube lecture: each chapter becomes a heading to write under.

Why your chapters are not showing

Work through these in order. The first three cover most cases.

Troubleshooting
  • The list starts with 00:00, not 0:05 or the first topic's real time.
  • There are at least three timestamps, each later than the one before.
  • No chapter is shorter than 10 seconds.
  • The timestamps are in the video description.
  • You saved the video and gave YouTube a few minutes to process it.
  • If you expected automatic chapters: YouTube says they are unavailable on channels with active strikes or for content that may be inappropriate for some viewers.
  • If you still do not have access to chapters, YouTube points to applying for access to Advanced features.

Chapters help viewers too

If you are a viewer, not an uploader, the same generator gives you an outline of someone else's video so you can pick the part worth your time. For a written recap rather than a list of sections, see how to summarize a long YouTube video. If you are comparing options, the best YouTube chapter generators lays them side by side.

How do I add chapters to a YouTube video?

Open the video in YouTube Studio and add a list of timestamps and titles to the description, starting at 00:00. You need at least three timestamps in ascending order, each chapter at least 10 seconds long.

Can AI generate YouTube chapters?

Yes. A tool can read the video's transcript, find where topics change and draft a timestamped list. Check it against the video before you paste it into the description.

Does YouTube add chapters automatically?

It can. Automatic chapters are on by default for new uploads, but not all videos are eligible and not all eligible videos get them. A chapter list you write yourself overrides them.

Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?

Usually the list does not start at 00:00, has fewer than three timestamps, or has a chapter under 10 seconds. For automatic chapters, YouTube also says they are unavailable on channels with active strikes.

Is there a free YouTube chapter generator?

Yes. UpSolo's chapter generator is free with no sign-up, with a daily limit per visitor.

Do chapters work on someone else's video?

Only the uploader can add chapters to a video. You can still generate an outline of any video with captions to navigate it yourself.
